Since the focus on emotional quotient or EQ is gradually gaining more significance vis-?-vis IQ, SEL or Social and Emotional Learning becomes an indispensable tool in education system. This is partnered with the goal of developing student’s social skills and emotional maturity. SEL is enabling students to develop leadership skills, empathy, effective listening skills, life skills, relationship skills, decision making, social awareness, positive attitude and problem solving skills.
Schools as well as other educational institutions do impart SEL by way of formative evaluation. This kind of assessment is enabling teachers to personalize their lessons to fit student’s requirements and at the same time, help them to grow as responsible and mature adults. The objective of formative assessment is give feedback both to educators and students as they make progress in learning. Formative assessment is helping teachers to see the gap between the student’s current performance and desired performance. This lets them to think of an approach that can eliminate any of these challenges that stop their students from learning.
SEL practitioners can help in building requisite skills in students and all educational students from all backgrounds by way of forming, training as well as easing the applications of such skills in the every day lives of the students. It’s been discovered that social and emotional learning programs are increasing academic achievement, self-esteem, social and emotional skills and even classroom behavior in students. Apart from that, this diminishes the chance of students to use drugs and aggression, indulge in antisocial activities and be bullied.
There is a chart followed in SEL programs to see formative assessment; with this chart, it helps in determining the progress and pace of learning that the student has by checking it from high to low level SEL skills. The progress levels that are portrayed in charts meet the set standards for the formative assessment. The chart also renders a definite objective the implements higher level of it. Using the chart, students are able to monitor their improvement throughout the course of the program.
Moreover, the chart function as a guide to the students in taking the next steps to climb up the ladder in their SEL progression chart. As a matter of fact, there are 4 different levels used for social and emotional learning progression chart and these include Score 4, Score 3, Score 2 and Score 1. Then again, there is also Score 0 or the level in which students do not have any understanding of the situation or whatsoever and attain little proficiency in following the aforementioned scores.
